New York City Visitor and Tourist Information

New York City Attractions

If you began a conversation with nearly anyone about the biggest cities in the world, the name of American city New York would definitely come up a few times. One of the largest tourist destinations in the world, New York City is visited by over forty million American and foreign tourists each year. Also known as the Big Apple, or the City that Never Sleeps, New York is popular for tourists because of its many attractions.

New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world, with people from all over the globe making up its 8.2 million residents. The city is made up of five different areas- The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island. Although there are many things for tourists to visit, New York also has attractions for those in the business and entertainment industries- Wall Street and Tin Pan Alley are impossible to miss for any finance and music enthusiasts respectively.

The two most famous structures in New York City would have to be the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France in 1886, and has since stood to become a symbol of freedom and escape from hardship. The Empire State Building is one of the tallest buildings in the world, standing at an impressive 1,472 feet when the height of its antenna is included.

Apart from those two awe-inspiring monuments, there are plenty of other reasons to visit New York City. To experience some of the city’s fine architecture, visitors can take a stroll in Manhattan’s Central Park- the most visited city park in the United States. Art lovers can visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a museum housing more than two million works of art from all corners of the world.

New York City Shopping

New York City is a major shopping destination for tourists, as most (if not all) of the premier fashion houses have outlets there. Places to shop in New York include Madison Avenue, where the likes of Prada, Gucci, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent all are located; another place for eager shoppers to venture into is Fifth Avenue- a place known as one of the most expensive streets in the world.

New York City Professional Sports

Another important part of New York is the sports teams it possesses and the benefit to the economy this has. New York is one of the few cities to have two baseball teams, the Yankees and the Mets. The former team is more popular, with the New York Yankees logo featuring on caps and clothing worn all over the world. New York also has teams that compete in the National Football League (Jets and Giants) and the National Basketball Association (Knicks). Away from team sports, New York hosts the New York City Marathon, as well as the U.S. Tennis Open (one of the four Grand Slams). New York is famous for many things, and it is near impossible for a tourist to find themselves with nothing to do should they visit the place.
